Fort Raigad

About 1 Km. before the Mahad Bus Stand yu need to take a left turn to reach Raigad Rope Way. Its 24 Km from Mahad and around 190 Km from Mumbai.
The Rope way is managed and operated by a private player. Near the Ticket window a big map of Raigad fort is displayed in Marathi with minute details. The Rope way is very steep and takes only 5 minutes to reach the destination. Its actually a one sided rope way. The Coaches travel to and fro and not in rotations. Two way ticket is Rs. 150/-. The cost of ticket also includes the cost towards a guided tour of Raigad. The Guides are properly trained and explains the basic information in a nice way.
Only the temple of 'Shiva' is in a better condition. The remains of the buildings does not give idea about the buildings constructed on the plinth. Mostly the buildings were constructed with the help of wooden pillars with a slanting roof. The temple is called ' Jagadishwar'. All other buildings are demolished by Muslim invaders. Even invaders have destroyed the sculptures on 'Nandi' in front of the temple and the entrance of main building. In ancient times the the entire hill top must be covered with Buildings. We could find few mounts at various corners of the hill top whihc are actually building structures covered with soil. There is lot to do for the Archiological Survey of India[ASI]. They charge Rs.5/- per person visiting the Fort. ASI seems to be inactive.
